A WORD FROM Willie

 Don’t leave your first love!

Greetings in the all-powerful name of Jesus!  I’m so excited about the study we have underway on Sunday mornings and evenings. The great book of Revelation is a text that all of us should sink our spiritual teeth into. This Sunday we are entering into the second chapter.  Jesus is addressing the churches (you and me).  Jesus finds the early church at Ephesus doing great things. He compliments them for their efforts. However, Jesus has concerns, and he voices them in verse four, “But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.” Despite all the praiseworthy elements in the Ephesian church, the penetrating, omniscient gaze of the Lord Jesus Christ discovered a fatal flaw. In spite of their noteworthy service in the Lord’s name, their worship had deteriorated into mechanical orthodoxy, ritualism, and legalism. Once where there was bountiful love, their relationships with Christ had degenerated and cooled.  They left their first love, the Lord. That spiritual love was for God and Christ, love for each other, and love for the lost.  It is love defined as obedience. “This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.,” 2 John 1:6.  They sank to a level of complacency revealed in their Christian responsibilities. Their love for their Lord and others diminished dramatically.  In the absence of a loving relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, the church became vulnerable.  Spiritual apathy and indifference towards others became the norm. Worldly cares and compromised judgment laced with evil would ultimately lead to the destruction of the church altogether.  Despite its outwardly robust appearance, a deadly spiritual cancer was growing at the heart of the Ephesian church.
In the midst of this, the Lord commanded in verse five, “Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first.” The Great Physician issued a prescription to the Ephesians. With compliance, it would cure their spiritual illness:

  • First, they needed to remember (“keep on remembering") from where they had fallen. Forgetfulness is frequently the initial cause of spiritual decline, and the Ephesians needed to recognize the grave nature of such a lapse.
  • Second, they needed to repent in a deliberate rejection of their sins. Failing to love God with all one's heart, soul, mind, and strength is sin   (Matt. 22:36–38).
  • Finally, they needed to demonstrate their genuine repentance and return to their early ways.  They needed to recapture the richness of Bible study; the devotion to prayer; and a passion for worship. All of these were characteristic of the early church.
May I pose a question?  Do you get excited about studying the riches of God’s Holy Word?  Do you look forward to spending personal time with God in prayer and praise? Do you look forward to Sunday mornings when you can join together with other believers for worship and Bible study?  If you answered no to any of these, heed the command of the one who loves us most:  “remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first “(Rev 2:5).
                                   In Christ Jesus’ service forever…

                                   Pastor Willie
